Movin’ along

It’s been a while since we stopped in a town for long enough for me to write a post. I’m still alive! Blistered and sore, but very alive.

680 miles in, I finally bid farewell to my first pair of shoes. I’m pretty sure I hung on to them for longer than I should have. The soles really started falling off about 7.5 miles before I was going to pick up my new shoes. That last 7.5 miles involved careful walking and lots of duct tape.

The shoes that took me 680 miles, along with the shoes that will hopefully take me another 680.

Nothing gets the adrenaline pumping quite like being at the highest point in a lava rock field during a thunderstorm, getting pelted with hail and strong wind, and not dying. As we continued uphill with the storm getting worst, I kept thinking about how this might be one of the stupider things I’ve done. We ran into two northbounders who were also out in the storm, so at least we weren’t the only stupid ones. Stormpocalypse was actually quite fun.

This is the face that I make when I’m walking through exposed lava rock fields during crazy wind, hail and thunder.
Windy Evan. The flailing poncho really helps capture the feel of the moment.

Next stop: Crater Lake. I’m looking forward to actually seeing the lake this time. Last time I was in the area, an active forest fire left the park so smoky that I got turned away at the gate.

It’s hard to believe we’re over halfway done with Oregon.

I met another Jukebox at Shelter Cove! He got his trail name for the same reason that I go mine. Both of us sing terribly any time we hear something that reminds us of a song lyric. He made me feel normal. 🙂
